Foundation For Contemporary Arts

www.foundationforcontemporaryarts.org

The Foundation for Contemporary Arts (FCA) is a New York based foundation established in 1963 by Jasper Johns and John Cage that supports artists, poets, dancers and musicians through one time, unrestricted grants. FCA asked us to create their first online presence with a new web site that highlights their mission, showcases their grant recipients and aids their fundraising process.

Artists Helping Artists
FCA started when a group of well-known artists came together to help Merce Cunningham launch a season on Broadway. They raised money for the venture by auctioning off their own work. After Merce’s performances concluded they found they had money left over. These funds went back into the community and a fundraising process was born that FCA uses to this day.

Because FCA is about artists supporting artists, we took an artist-focused approach to the project. The site’s minimal look and feel encourages users to browse FCA grantees in a number of ways; by theme, by year awarded and by using a global search feature. We also created detailed biography pages for each artist and designed custom blogs that allow some artists to share insights about their work with the public. A searchable database of grant winners going back to the 1960's and a gallery of over 400 artworks from the foundation's collection round out the custom features we created for this project.
