Redesigning the GRESB 2014 Survey & Input Portal

April 23, 2014

We just launched Phase Two of our ongoing work with GRESB. Right after our redesign of their Output Portal in 2013, we started preparing for a relaunch of their Input Portal and Survey for 2014. The GRESB team asked us to design a unified system for the entire GRESB data collection process that updates their Survey Tool and aligns it with the analysis and benchmark tools that we redesigned last year.

GRESB is setting a new industry standard for assessing the environmental, social, and governance of real estate portfolios. For GRESB, collecting quality data with their survey tool plays a key role in their success:

“The pension funds (and their fiduciaries) that use GRESB data are increasingly scrutinizing the quality of sustainability disclosure. They want credible, quantitative data, based on relevant metrics that they can use in their investment decision-making process.”

The GRESB team challenged us to make the 2014 Survey easier to navigate which encourages respondents to complete all of the questions and leads to better data collection and quality.

Our design for the survey has a clearer hierarchy that helps respondents avoid getting lost in the complexity of the survey’s nested questions and multiple sections. GRESB_input_forms_levels_sm3

Survey completion feedback tools are usually a simple, linear percentage bar across the top of the page, but the GRESB survey is filled out in a nonlinear fashion. To help orient respondents we built completion feedback into the navigation so that users can quickly see what sections of the survey are incomplete.GRESB_input_forms_menu_sm2

We also designed better support tools that give real time guidance to the more than 550 property companies whose employees will fill out the survey this year.GRESB_input_forms_levels_sm4
